Event sponsors are responsible for ensuring compliance with information provided. The amount of alcohol on hand must be reasonable and proportional to the number of attendees. Only beer, wine and sparkling wine may be served on University premises. No hard liquor, spirits or beer kegs are permitted. Food and non-alcoholic beverages must be on hand. Failure to comply could result in the closure of the event.

Event sponsors are responsible for being present at all the times during the event and for establishing adequate controls to ensure that all person being served alcoholic beverages are at least 21 years of age, whether or not a licensed bartender, server or caterer is on site. In order for alcohol to be served an individual, a valid picture I.D. may be required to be presented to the appropriate event sponsor personnel.

In order to identify persons that are not of age to drink alcohol, a secure system shall be used at large events where under-aged persons may be present and alcohol is served, as such, but not limited to:
  • Colored wrist bands, hand stamps or specially marked name tags given only to persons of legal drinking age
  • Placement of physical barriers, such as fencing for beer gardens, to separate those persons who are at least 21 years of age from those who are under-aged

All caterers/servers operating at the University and serving alcohol shall be informed of the campus alcohol policy by the event sponsor. Alcoholic beverages not being served directly by approved caterer/servers at the event or event sponsors are prohibited. Individuals are prohibited from bringing their own alcoholic beverages to any function.

Event sponsors must consider special circumstances which may require additional security. They UCSF Police Department is responsible for evaluating, recommending, and providing security services for all organized events on campus that are requested by campus departments and organizations.
